Stair Stringers
65Stair Stringers
Stair Stringers are the backbone of the staircase and the entire structure rests on the stringers. These stringers covers the entire length of the stairs, right from the bottom of the structure to the top of it. The stair stringers are fixed at the bottom of the structure and connected to the various other support sections with the help of the nails. These stringers should be made of heavy materials, and hard wood is one of the best choice for constructing these stringers.
Now a days a much easier version has come in the market and many households are opting for it, the new stringers are made up of metal and are fixed on the ground and than the rest of the structure is constructed on the framework already built. The metal frame is quite rigid and has the potential to even sustain during heavy loads. In case of hardwood stringers, the grooves are cut with the help of steel square with C clamps. The procedure is clamping a stair wooden stick to the points on each side of the steel square, depicting the length of the thread and that of the riser. Now both the thread and the riser has to be cut in the stringer so that the actual pieces can be fixed later on. Most important consideration is to ensure stringer fits completely in the space designed throughout the entire length of the staircase, if not doesn’t fit than it would be better to change the design or get a totally different set of prefabricated stairs.
Prefabricated stairs comes in different sizes and it saves you the headache of measuring the actual length step by step and than finalizing on the thickness of threads and height and depth of each and every thread. The kit is a precut of all the sections of the staircase and you will just have to fix the units one by one. Stringers will have to be cut in the actual size required for the threads and risers, so that this can fit properly and proper care must be taken while doing that because ignoring the thickness of the thread is a rookie mistake that many people make and it gives your staircase an uneven finish. If thickness is not taken into consideration than the first step of the staircase will have more riser height than the other steps.
Stair stringers are fixed in the ground with the help of screws and nails and has to be fixed in the structure of the house to give it more stability and with one end fixed in the ground the other end goes into the wall for permanent fixing and the side stringer is fixed on the side walls, depending upon whether the wall is one side or on both the sides of the staircase. A single unit has generally three stair stringers, one at the centre and two at the edges, but if the width of the staircase is quite big, than to give the necessary stability to the stairs four stringers have to be installed, obviously in this case four stringers are installed at the equal distance to each other.
